The West Newbury Police Department is currently seeking part-time civilian dispatchers for the West Newbury Public Safety Dispatch Center. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and be a high school graduate. The department seeks those with strong communication and human relations skills, who can multitask and are willing to go through the required training. Required training includes obtaining the following: APCO telecommunicator, APCO Emergency Medical Dispatch, CPR, First Responder, CJIS, and E911. Candidates should also have experience with computers.

Effective dispatchers have superior listening and questioning skills and know how to prioritize. They have strong decision-making skills and the ability to remain calm in extremely stressful situations in order to effectively provide proper services to callers dealing with emergencies. Dispatchers are responsible for receiving calls for service in a courteous and professional manner, determining the needs of the caller, and directing the proper agencies to assist the caller in meeting their needs.

Dispatchers must also provide emergency medical dispatch when necessary. In addition, dispatchers obtain and relay information to the responding agencies and assists these agencies in receiving whatever support the responders need. The dispatcher maintains a daily log of accurate call information, monitors the activity of all public safety units and area radio channels, and provides assistance to the public and other town departments. Dispatchers are required to work days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends. Pay is $25.55 per hour and night time differential is available for second and third shift work. Holiday pay is also available. The Town of West Newbury is an Equal Employment/Affirmative Action Employer.
