Position Summary:
UIC is seeking a Journeyman Electrician to join the Technology Solution's team, The Journeyman Electrician will install, maintain, test and repair all aspects ofcommunication systems including raceways, cabling infrastructure and equipmentfor various types of Network and Analog Facilities according to industrystandards and electrical code. Knowledge of IP based data communicationssystems, IP Based/PBX telecommunication systems along with traditional analogsystems and emergency phone systems is needed. Work entails both indoor andoutdoor environments.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Install, test, troubleshoot and repair both fiber and coppercommunications cabling for voice and data services which utilize the campuscabling infrastructure.
  • Rearrange, install or remove surface raceways, cable traysand conduits to support layer 1 cabling.
  • Maintain and install hardware, such as Centrex, VoIP andemergency phones, network switches, wireless hardware and security hardware.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with networkengineering staff, admins and clients in supporting daily work. Communicationwill be verbal, written and/or electronically.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in specialprojects as assigned.
  • Other duties include but are not limited to time reporting,material tracking, circuit tracking etc.


Minimum Qualifications Required:
  1. Experience sufficient to qualifyas a journeyman electrician, with a minimum of four (4) years/48 months ofactual work in the trade, which may include apprentice and/or vocationaltraining. The trade for this purpose shall include work normallyperformed by a/an Electrician, Maintenance Electrician, Journeyman Electrician,Inside Wireman, Control Electrician, Electrician Technician, IndustrialElectrician, Journeyman Wireman, Communications Journeyman.
  2. Three (3) years/36 months ofexperience/training in the maintenance of systems in support of telephony,voice, and data communications, and alarm systems, that was gained in the last five(5) years/60 months. This experience/training may include experience/trainingused to satisfy Credential Requirement #1 above.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Networking, Ciscoswitches, and Windows Server administration
  • Knowledge of Traditional Telephonycircuits such as PRI's, DSL, Pots and Centrex circuits.
  • Understanding of IP basedtelephony and network infrastructure.
  • Experience and skilled use ofcertification test instruments, network troubleshooting tools, fiber optictesting and troubleshooting equipment and analog cabling analysis instruments.
  • Ability to read floor plans,organize job processes and track time and materials on work orders.
  • Ability to install conduit andsurface mounted raceways.
  • Contribute to a work environmentthat encourages the respect for co-workers and clients.
  • Knowledge of the TIA/EIAStructured Cabling Standards and Electrical Codes and the ability to apply them
  • Skilled use of Telecommunicationselectrical and construction power tools and hand tools
  • Knowledge and experience in theinstallation of both inside plant and outside plant copper and fiber opticcabling.
