About the position

Fortuna is seeking an experienced IBM MQ z/OS Systems Consultant to support a California state government client. This consultant will assist with the installation, configuration, optimization, and operational support of IBM MQ on z/OS mainframe environments. The role requires deep expertise in messaging middleware, mainframe infrastructure, and system performance monitoring. The consultant will collaborate with technical teams to troubleshoot MQ incidents, optimize system performance, and ensure the stability and reliability of the enterprise messaging environment. US Citizenship or Green Card required. California residence is required. WORKSITE: Hybrid, must be located within driving distance of Sacramento, San Jose, Rancho Cordova, or Vacaville. WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, Monday–Friday during standard Pacific Time business hours. Monitor MQ queue managers, channels, and message flows to ensure system performance and stability. Troubleshoot and resolve MQ-related incidents while minimizing system downtime. Collaborate with application teams to design and implement reliable enterprise messaging solutions. Perform system capacity planning, upgrades, and patch management for MQ environments. Review existing configurations, hardware platforms, services, and provisioning processes to identify optimization opportunities. Assist with installation and configuration of MQ software within the client's enterprise environment. Support planning, structuring, and deployment of MQ environments and layered applications on z/OS. Provide remote system support, troubleshooting, and performance tuning for MQ infrastructure. Develop documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures to support MQ environments. Provide knowledge transfer, training, and technical guidance to internal technical teams. Recommend improvements to system architecture, configuration, and operational processes. Ensure stability of MQ environments following z/OS upgrades and system changes. WHAT YOU'LL BRING: Minimum of five (5) years of experience installing, configuring, and maintaining IBM MQ on z/OS mainframe platforms. Strong experience monitoring MQ queue managers, channels, and message traffic. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve MQ-related incidents in enterprise environments. Experience supporting system upgrades, patch management, and capacity planning. Experience collaborating with development and application teams to implement messaging solutions. Ability to create technical documentation, operational procedures, and runbooks. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment. Strong organizational and prioritization skills for managing multiple tasks and projects. Experience mentoring or training technical staff is preferred.
