DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR (Microsoft SQL Server / Azure)

RIT is seeking a full-time Database Administrator who will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of Microsoft SQL Server database systems supporting MERIT's clinical trial management applications in Azure cloud environments. This role ensures data integrity, optimal performance, and compliance with regulatory standards while collaborating with development, data management, and validation teams to support ongoing clinical research operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Database Design & Development

  • Design and develop SQL Server database solutions including logical and physical database design and implementation
  • Make architectural decisions regarding database structure in consultation with development teams
  • Evaluate and implement database optimization strategies to improve performance and scalability in Azure environments
  • Support the strategic direction of cloud-based information processing systems related to MERIT applications

Azure & SQL Server Administration

  • Maintain the integrity and security of all electronic records in compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Manage Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and/or SQL Server on Azure VMs
  • Investigate and resolve database performance issues using Azure monitoring tools and SQL Server performance tuning techniques
  • Manage database change requests following established change control and documentation practices
  • Monitor database health, capacity, and performance metrics using Azure Monitor and SQL Server tools

Clinical Trial Systems Support

  • Understand MERIT's proprietary clinical trial products in sufficient detail to support technical discussions with operations and validation teams
  • Develop and support data collection and reporting tools for individual protocols and departmental needs
  • Provide technical support for ongoing data transfers and integrations for production studies, including Azure Data Factory pipelines where applicable
  • Support data export functionality for MERIT customized software products

Collaboration & Compliance

  • Participate in data validation and verification activities, providing technical expertise to the process
  • Develop training sessions and materials for development and data management team members
  • Maintain compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members
  • Maintain positive relationships with customers, vendors, and regulatory stakeholders

Project Management & Problem Solving

  • Organize and prioritize work assignments to complete tasks on time with high quality
  • Anticipate potential problem areas and implement preventive solutions
  • Apply creative approaches to solve complex technical challenges
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to changes in procedures, processes, technology, and assignments

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field from a four-year college or university
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience with large-scale Microsoft SQL Server database development and administration
  • Proven experience with Azure cloud database services (Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, or SQL Server on Azure VMs)
  • Experience in a transactional client/server environment
  • Healthcare or regulated industry experience preferred

Technical Skills - Required:

  • Expert-level T-SQL query writing, optimization, and performance tuning
  • Hands-on experience with Azure SQL services and Azure portal management
  • Proficiency with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and Azure Data Studio
  • Understanding of database concepts: normalization, indexing, transactions, security, high availability
  • Knowledge of SQL Server performance monitoring and troubleshooting tools (Extended Events, Query Store, DMVs)
  • Experience with database development and version control practices
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Visual Studio

Technical Skills - Preferred:

  • Azure certifications (Azure Administrator, Azure Database Administrator, or similar)
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps, or other Azure integration services
  • Familiarity with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or Power BI
  • Experience with Always On Availability Groups or Azure SQL failover groups
  • Knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, or other healthcare data compliance regulations

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as a team member or leader
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
