The Control Systems Engineer located in Topeka, KS is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and maintenance of the plant floor control systems, information systems, networks, and telecommunication systems support of the manufacturing operations. The person in this job will play a key role on the team to design, install, and start-up and operate the manufacturing facility

What You Will Do:

  • Design, specification, development, installation, start up, troubleshooting, and improvement of process control systems, plant floor systems, business systems, and equipment.

  • Support plant as a resource for troubleshooting and problem solving of business systems, plant floor systems and control issues

  • Lead the development and implementation of process improvements (reliability, waste, product quality, safety, and cost) to meet business needs.

  • Prepare, submit, and manage controls technology and information technology aspects of the Capital Expenditure Budget and support project managers in achieving project deliverables

  • Manages all aspects of project lifecycle: viability, schedule and scope adherence, project cost controls, validation, start-up, troubleshooting, technology transfer and closure.

  • Leads the technology transfer for the plant and supports global technology with implementation of new capital projects and new controls processes

  • Develop, implement, and maintain hardware and software aspects of the plant floor systems, plant control systems, business systems (computer network), and phone and voice systems.

  • Prepare and manage operational and capital expenditure budgets for plant control systems and all information technology systems.

  • Develop and maintain specifications, technical documentation, and procedures for controls processes and equipment which are consistent with KPI goals and support Quality and EOHS Standards

  • Leadership and management of internal resources (controls technicians and information technology) and external resources (Software integrators, hardware support)

  • Develop new insights and drive innovative engineering and controls solutions

  • Support implementation of Quality Assurance and Food Safety initiatives

  • Ensure personnel adhere to Hill’s policies, safety standards, and Good Manufacturing Practices, including Quality Assurance and Food Safety

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • BS Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline

  • 5+ years’ experience in engineering project management from project concept to implementation

  • 3+ years’ experience in a manufacturing setting with demonstrated knowledge, experience, design and programming with the following:

    • Industrial Automation Networks (ControlNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet, Profibus) Process and Machine Instrumentation

    • Load cells, mass flow meters, sensors, automated valves and servo controls

    • Programming, testing, installation and start-up of Allen-Bradley PLC’s and Aveva software and server application


Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range $90,000.00 - $135,000.00 USD

Pay is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. Salaried employees may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, profit-sharing, and long-term incentives for Executive-level roles.

Benefits: Salaried employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, paid parental leave, disability coverage, and participation in the 401(k) retirement plan with company matching contributions subject to eligibility requirements. Additional benefits include a minimum of 15 vacation/PTO days (hourly employees receive a minimum of 120 hours) and 13 paid holidays (vacation days are prorated based on the employee's hire date within the calendar year). Paid sick leave is adjusted based on role and location in accordance with local laws. Detailed information regarding paid sick leave entitlements will be provided to employees upon hiring and may be subject to adjustments based on changes in legislation or company policies.
